It only took me a year, but I FINALLY got around to making some reusable cloth baby wipes for Little Man. We’ve been using cloth diapers since he was about 3 months old, and I’ve been meaning to switch to cloth wipes, too, but I just kept putting it off…until now. I found this tutorial by Lady Lee’s Home, that made it look so easy and painless. So I did it, and I’m SO glad we’ve finally switched!
They’re soft and durable, and it’s ZERO extra work to clean them since I just throw them in with the diapers to wash (with my DIY Cloth Diaper Detergent!) Bonus: Even the hubs likes them! He says they smell better and work better than disposable wipes ,
Moral of the story: If you’re on the fence… JUST DO IT. They’re worth it! You can easily buy cloth baby wipes like these, but they can get expensive FAST, and making them is a cinch!So, What Do You Need?How To:
First I washed the fleece to reduce shrinking in the future, then I ironed the edges. (You can iron the entire thing if you’d like, but I didn’t think it was necessary.)
Next, I used Pinking Shears to cut the raw edges of my fleece. Again, pinking shears are great because they have a zigzag blade, which helps reduce fraying. They won’t completely prevent fraying, but it does help significantly, in my opinion. You could just as easily use regular scissors, or even a rotary cutter if you would like; however, if you go that route, I would suggest sewing or serging around the edges if you’re worried about fraying.
After that, I started cutting my fabric into strips. I wanted the finished product to be a 7×7 inch square. (About the size of a disposable baby wipe), so I cut the first strip 7 inches wide.
Next I cut those strips every 7 inches to make the 7×7″ squares. Easy Peasy!
Since I cut kind of fast I had to go back through and trim some of them up a little bit. They don’t have to be perfect, but…you know… somewhat square-shaped , I ended up with a little over 100 squares! I took about 20 of them for my facial cleansing wipes, and used the rest for baby wipes!
I folded them so that they would pop up each time I took one out (like Kleenex or baby wipes do). See this short video on how to fold them:Now, for the Solution:
It’s this easy: Mix 1/4 Cup Almond Oil (or jojoba, or baby oil, or melted coconut oil….) with 2 Tablespoons Baby Wash and 1 Cup of water in a small bowl. I used a whisk to make sure it mixed well. You can do what I did, and pour the solution straight over your homemade wipes in a container, OR put the solution in a spray bottle and spray directly on the individual wipes as you’re ready to use them.DONE!
