How to Disable Automatic App updates on Android Device

Android is no doubt one of the best smartphone operating system in the world, and the reason behind it is its open nature. Be it the huge app ecosystem, or flagship Google services that come bundled with all the devices running Android OS, all are the best in their respective department. But, not everything is good here. There are certain settings and options that still annoy most of the users.

One such option is the auto-update app one, that updates the downloaded apps without the user permission and uses any of the networks that are available at the moment. It can be quite frustrating to handle the auto-update apps option, as it is enable by default, and you must be searching for ways on how to stop apps from updating automatically. To ease out the process, here are the steps to disable automatic app updates on Android device.

Step 1: Google has made it fairly easy to turn off automatic app updates, and you can do it from the Google Play Store itself. So, first of all you need to go to the Play Store on your Android device.

Step 2: When you are inside the Play Store, click on the hamburger menu on top left corner, and a small menu will slide from the left side of screen. There you will find Settings options.

Step 3: Click on the Settings option and the settings menu will open where you will find the option to disable automatic app updates on Android device.

Step 4: There you will find an option that says Auto-update apps. Click on it and a popup menu will appear with three options, namely Do not auto-update apps, Auto-update apps at any time. Data charges may apply, and Auto-update apps over Wi-Fi only. This is where you can stop automatic app updates.

Step 5: If you want to completely disable automatic app updates on Android device, then you should select the first option, that is Do not auto-update apps. And if you are on an unlimited Wi-Fi connection, then you may also choose to Auto-update apps over Wi-Fi only. This will automatically update the apps only when it is connected to a Wi-Fi connection and not on your networks connection, and will save your cost.

Should you use this option?

By default, this auto-update apps option is set on in the Play Store and your apps will automatically update on whatever network is available at that moment, be it your Wi-Fi or your mobile network. It certainly depends on personal choice, if you want to turn off automatic app updates or not. If you have an unlimited Wi-Fi connection in your home or office, then you might consider to let the apps auto-update on that network, this wont cost you anything extra.

But if you are using the mobile network to connect to the internet, which is quite costly, then you must immediately use the above mentioned steps to disable automatic app updates on Android device. Otherwise, those heavy apps will auto-update using the 2G/3G/4G network of your smartphone and will cost you a bomb! Though, this option makes the Android experience, as you dont have to remember to update the apps, but you need to be a bit careful to prevent that extra cost.
