The Federation of Small Businesses

Mike Cherry FSB National Policy Chairman:

“The FSB is the UK’s leading business organisation. It exists to protect and promote the interests of the self-employed and all those who run their own business. The FSB is non-party political, and with around 200,000 members, it is also the largest organisation representing the UK’s 5.2 million small businesses.

2014 has seen real progress and breakthroughs on key issues facing members such as late payments and business rates. In addition, we have seen a significant increase in our profile. It is our increased dealings with politicians, the civil servants and the media that has played a large part in increasing our credibility and influence.

This positions us as the most effective business lobbying group in the country, enabling us to ensure the small business community is heard.

Throughout 2014 and the beginning of 2015, leading figures from all the main political parties in Westminster, as well as key politicians in the devolved nations, addressed our events. There are many examples, including the Prime Minister speaking at a FSB national event for the first time, but together they demonstrate our unprecedented influence.

It is also to our credit that we continue to maintain a strict policy of political neutrality – always letting issues affecting our members set the agenda.

Through the media we’ve been able to raise the profile of important issues affecting our members. Supply chain bullying is now in the spotlight and momentum from media coverage and evidence from members led to a summit at 10 Downing Street with industry leaders discussing poor payment practices.

When looking at achievements, it is all too easy to focus on the public facing work we do with policymakers and the media. But none of this would be possible without a strong evidence base to back our arguments. It is our Big Voice community, which is making such a significant contribution to this success.

So what do these activities actually mean in practice for our members? Small businesses can be reassured that the FSB is standing behind them to ensure their issues are heard by Government – and we are doing all we can through our #ibacksmallbusiness campaign and the Business Manifesto to ensure the next Government does the same.”

FSB Membership

As the UK’s leading business organisation, we also offer our members an extensive package of benefits which are specifically designed to protect a business as well as assist with growth and help save money.

For a low annual fee, all FSB members can benefit from inclusive Employment, Tax and Legal Protection insurance, 24/7 legal advice, Health & Safety and HR online support along with a host of discounted services such as business banking, insurance, pension planning, including an auto enrolment solution and much more.
