Programs of Note
Located on a beautifully wooded and historic 550-acre campus high atop the Cumberland Plateau, St. Andrew’s-Sewanee offers students an innovative curriculum presented by a creative and engaged faculty who are dedicated to cultivating well-rounded and thoughtful human beings.
St. Andrew’s-Sewanee prides itself on being not just a school but also a community.
Long gone are the days when the town of St. Andrew’s, as it was called, had its own zip code and post office, but there’s still a small town feel to the campus.
Residential faculty and their families attend meals in the dining hall. Students who are interested can count on babysitting jobs. The school’s many dogs wander campus hoping to find a forgotten ice cream cone.
It’s a closeness you can feel from the moment you arrive. On a warm day, students gather in the Adirondack chairs in the main quad to strum guitars or share stories.
In 1992, SAS renovated a faculty house into a home for 12 students and one faculty family. Card House was an immediate success with both boarders and their parents.
The dream of family-sized houses became the model as three new residence halls, Watts, Woods, and Colmore Houses, were built.
To bring all the residence halls up to the high standard of these new houses, renovations were undertaken in St. Mary’s Hall and Harvey House. These two residence halls are divided by floor into separate “houses” with their own houseparents, common room, and identity.
Today all our boarding students live in gracious, homey residences with front porches and rocking chairs. Students live in renovated rooms with private telephones (two lines per room) and internet access (two ports per room); and every student is part of a small St. Andrew’s-Sewanee family.
Many schools have given up the struggle to remain small and personable, to act more like a community and less like an institution, but it is a struggle SAS believes is worth it.
