Five Tips To Help You Care For Your Fabric Shades

Fabric shades provide a texture and beauty similar to drapes, with the clean lines and easy operation of blinds. The most common designs used for fabric are roman shades and vertical blinds. Unlike vinyl versions of these shade styles, fabric varieties require careful cleaning so that they look their best.Tip #1: Pretreat Shades

Many manufacturers pretreat fabric window shades to help them resist stains and dust. Your installation company may also offer treatment as part of their installation package, so make sure to inquire. Otherwise, you can pretreat the shades yourself with a specially formulated fabric treatment. Shake the can well before spraying it on, and then spray it evenly on both sides. If you can’t easily take your shades down to treat them, cover the wall with newspaper first. Otherwise, the treatment may leave a residue on painted surfaces.Tip #2: Vacuum Weekly

Dust is the main enemy of fabric shades, since it can work it’s way into the fibers and become a stain. Treating the fabric is only half the battle against dust, the other half is regular vacuuming. Simply use the upholstery attachment to vacuum both sides of the shade each week. If you have pets or if your windows are often open, you may need to vacuum more frequently to control the extra hair and dust.Tip #3: Use Anti-Statics

You can further control dust and animal fuzz with an anti-static treatment. Although anti-static sprays are available for fabric, a dryer softener sheet can achieve the same thing. Simply wipe the sheet over the front and back of the sheet once a week. You can even reuse the sheet in your laundry afterward.Tip #4: Eradicate Stains

Most stains are the result of skin oils and dust, although food and dirt could also be the culprit. A solution of mild dish soap and water is all you need to remove a stain from treated shades. Simply rub the soapy water into the stain and then rinse with clear water. Blot dry and vacuum as usual.

It’s a good idea to test this spot treatment first in an inconspicuous place, just to make sure the dye in the shades doesn’t run.Tip #5: Open Shades

It can be tempting to simply push through fabric vertical blinds instead of opening them, especially when they are hung in front of a sliding patio door. This is a recipe for dirty shades by the door opening, though. Open the shades every day to minimize the temptation. You can also opt for a variety of vertical blinds that have a bottom chain connecting the slats, which makes it more difficult to simply walk through them.← Learn Four Reasons Why Quartz Countertops May Be The Best Counters To Use In Your KitchenSteps to Clean and Replace the Thermocouple inside of a Water Heater ‘
