I Read it For You! Jake & Miller’s Big Adventure: A Prepper’s Book for Kids (A Review)

About the Book

“Being Prepared Is a Ton of Fun! The world can be a scary place! There are snowstorms and mean snakes, hot jungles and wild rivers. But intrepid adventurer Jake and his dog, Miller aren’t scared” they’re prepared! In Jake and Miller’s Big Adventure, young readers discover it’s never too early to start prepping. Learning how to use life-saving survival equipment like canned goods, water filters, first aid kits, Mylar blankets and emergency radios can keep you safe, healthy and happy even in the scariest of adventures”whether you’re deep in the jungle or hunkering down at home.”About the AuthorBernie Carr became fascinated with survival techniques and self-sufficiency as a child, hearing stories of her father’s adventures in the wilds of Southeast Asia as a land surveyor and avid outdoorsman. As an adult, she developed an interest in emergency preparedness and self-reliance, having survived the 1991 Northridge earthquake in California, the 1992 Los Angeles riots, and the evacuation of her home during the Southern California wildfires. She relocated to Houston, Texas, in an effort to avoid more natural disasters only to arrive in time to encounter the fury of Hurricane Ike in 2008. She is a wife and mother living in Texas with her family and their dog, Miller. She writes at apartmentprepper.com, and is the author of the national bestseller The Prepper’s Pocket Guide.“I wrote this book to help children get into a preparedness mindset as early as possible. Jake & Miller will help parents teach self-reliance to their kids, and knowing what to do helps children be less afraid and better prepared for any situation that may arise.” -Bernie CarrWhat I Liked

This is the perfect book for any parent trying to instill a preparedness mindset in their kids at an early age. It’s never too early to start prepping! , It can be a great read-aloud for preschool aged children, but would still be engaging for kids in late elementary school, too, and personally, I think some adults could benefit from reading it as well 😉

I love how Bernie captured the imagination of a little boy, Jake, and used Miller, his trusty yet anxious companion, to explain to kids that the world doesn’t have to be a scary place. Jake’s imagination runs wild as he dreams up all sorts of adventures they could go on together. Miller skeptically asks the “What if” questions like “What if we get hungry?”, and Jake answers by adding necessary supplies like canned goods and dog biscuits to their pack. Just a little bit of preparation can bring peace of mind to adults, kids, and pups alike.

This book could be a great conversation starter for kids who have gone through a catastrophic event or know someone who has. For example: “What could we do to make it not so scary next time? How can we prepare to face such and such if it happens again? If we have to leave our house like Aunt Laura did, what should we take with us?” etc, etc. The possibilities for great discussions with your kids are endless! You could even have some fun letting them help pack their own Bug Out Bag!

I also adore the illustrations! Aja Wells perfectly captured the essence of the story, and made it come to life. What I Didn’t Like

Ummm… That there’s not a sequel? I loved it! I can’t wait until Little Man is a little bit older and can actually comprehend some of it instead of just looking at the pictures. It’s such a cute book for littles!Where Can I Get it?

This is definitely a book that I am excited to have in my Prepper Library! You can find Jake & Miller’s Big Adventure on Amazon in either Kindle or Hardcover versions, or at bookstores near you such as Barnes & Noble. What About You
