IQBAL calls on grads to join “JOURNEY OF PEACE”
Mohagher Iqbal of the MILF Peace Panel called on the new graduates of Xavier University to be a part of the journey of peace that both the revolutionary front and the government have started since 1997.
Speaking on Thursday (March 26) during the university convocation, Iqbal urged the graduates of Cagayan de Oro’s Jesuits-run institution to “speak up and be heard” by asking questions and even proposing solutions “for what good is education if not to solve the more complex problems of our times.”Iqbal also told them that they should all immerse themselves in the problems of their times now that they have acquired knowledge and skills in school.Iqbal was in the university convocation to receive the prestigious Fr. William F Masterson SJ Award in recognition of “his conscientious and patient efforts to engage in democratic dialogue and negotiations for peace in Mindanao.”Iqbal shared the award with his counterpart GPH Peace Panel Chief Negotiator Prof. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer.The concurrent chair of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission dedicated the award to the “collective effort of men and women of good will who seek a better and peaceful future for the next generation.”In his message, Xavier University or Ateneo de Cagayan President Roberto C Yap, SJXU said that they “want to walk with these three leaders in the long journey to a just and lasting peace. By conferring these awards during the 2015 Commencement Exercises, Xavier hopes to inspire her graduates to be brave and bold, and not be afraid to walk the demanding but necessary path of peace in our troubled island of Mindanao.”Aside from Iqbal and Ferrer, OPAPP Sec. Teresita Deles was also guest of honor as she was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree.Peace ConvocationA day earlier, Iqbal spent four hours in simple but candid conversations with the religious, NGOs and media of Cagayan de Oro.He gave updates on the Bangsamoro Basic Law and answered too many questions on the peace process in general.The gathering was held at the Bishop’s House with no less than Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ, DD and Msgr. Rey Manuel S. Montano, AB, JDC welcoming Iqbal. ####
