Caldwell Emax Electronic Earmuffs Review
Caldwell Emax Electronic Noise Cancelling Headphones are a very affordable solution to hearing protection at the gun range. They are earmuffs however also headphones. You can adjust the volume of the headphones and they have a left and right microphone for directional hearing so that you can maintain situational awareness.
Excessively loud noises are immediately clipped so that the microphone does not let you hear loud noises. Soon as the loud noise has stopped, the microphones and headphones resume normal hearing. So while you can still hear instruction or people talking around you, the moment shots are fired or any other loud noise, the headphones cancel the sound and let the earmuffs kick in protecting your hearing while maintaining situational awareness.
There is a 3.5 mm input jack where you can plug in headphones from your media device. The nice thing about this is that you can use that devices volume control along with the microphone volume control and still hear whats going on around you even if you are listening to music. You can directly add a audio device by plugging it in via the 3.5mm jack, alternatively you can plug in a bluetooth receiver and make it completely wireless.
So now you can listen to audio, radio or whatever while you are out at the range or in the field or any type of situation. What I like is that I can still use my ear piece for my BaoFeng UV-5R, it fits nicely under the headphones with no discomfort and then I can hear my radio as well as utilize and adjust the volume of mic volume and audio device independently.
However if you like to just listen to nature or hear more of your surroundings or even amplify sound you can use the Caldwell Emax as hearing aids as well. So go ahead and listen to that conversation 50 yards away from you, because you can.
Of course there are more practical applications such as receiving instruction via 2 way radio, though you would need a separate adapter for the radio. In my case I use the earphone piece that came with the Baofeng UV5R and it doesn’t get in the way of the headphones.
Additionally if you wanted to make wireless for your audio device you can purchase a bluetooth headphone jack to pair to your Bluetooth devices.
