The Huffington Post is an American news website and blog founded by Arianna Huffington, Kenneth Lerer, Andrew Breitbart and Jonah Peretti, featuring columnists and various news sources. The site offers news, blogs, and original content and covers content on politics, business, entertainment, environment, technology, popular media, lifestyle, culture, comedy, healthy living, women’s interests and local news.
The Huffington Post was launched on May 9, 2005 and Arianna Huffington has stated that its goal is to go beyond the traditional liberal/left and conservative/right divide in American politics and news media.
On February 7, 2011, AOL acquired the mass market Huffington Post for US$315 million, making Arianna Huffington editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post Media Group. In 2012, The Huffington Post was the first commercially run, United States digital media enterprise to win a Pulitzer Prize.
Website review
The Huffington Post is much more than most news blogs you will come across. It has been one of the broadest news websites I have come across. The website has a enormous staff of more than 150 people in personal.
The website gets updated many times a day and gives updates on the latest and greatest in the world. The site offers a different view on the news than you would see on most news websites, for instance I was surprised to even find a serious topic on UFO’s which most news sites ignore or would ridicule.
The website is almost to big to review as it offers so much content that you’ll be able to spend all day reading just having read what happened the passed 2 days.
What I really like is the social integration to the website, and more into it’s content. For instance they integrated a most popular function based on Facebook likes, integrating social media and peoples opinion directly into a main site function.
Visually and textually the websites has been thought through. It’s a positive reading environment with a professional look and feel. Also the large amount of images and video’s make the content diverse and fun to get an image of the background of the stories.
The large amount of content also makes the site feek somewhat busy, getting thrown so much content in your face. This is normal at a news website, but I would like to see a way in which it would have been brought in a less heavy way. For instance bigger visuals and less text at the home page? These are small details. The website offers all you could ask for from a news website. The site gives much background information and contact possibilities which makes the site highly credible.
Winning the Pulitzer prize should give no doubt that the Huffington Post is one of the great news sources on the web.
