VMware Workstation includes a utility called virtual network editor which can be used manage the virtual networks. VMware Player also had this utility but they decided to remove it and not by accident!
It is an important utility since virtual machines will use NAT to automatically assign a virtual IP address that may or may not work for your network, it might collide with your network’s subnet. For the latest VMware Player the default range is 192.168.1.0/24.
You can try to extract this utility from the installation file and if you want to do so you can find the steps on this blog post. However this method won’t work for Linux users but we –Linux users– like to play with config files 🙂 If all you want to do is to change this IP range then just go to /etc/vmware execute the following command –as root user– to replace the IP range with a safe one.
find . -type f -name "*" -print | xargs sed -i 's/192.168.1/192.168.5/g'
And don’t forget to restart vmware and your network.
/etc/init.d/vmware restart /etc/init.d/networking restart
