If there is one thing a rooted phone user does most, it’s flashing. What I found most annoying when I first rooted my phone was the lack of good backup software. I could flash three to four times a day trying the latest and greatest of what some new developer was able to port to the G1. The only problem was, when I found a good ROM that I liked, getting it back to the way I had it before was extremely time consuming. Things like changing the notifications and re-downloading all of my applications were taking forever. I had lost hope of finding a good solution until I found MyBackup Pro.

With the latest update, you now have the ability to back up everything to your SD Card or the Online Storage (50mb). This application can back up everything, including your SMS, MMS, Settings and Home Settings. To the stock user this may not even hit your radar, but to an everyday flasher, this is a lifesaver. With MyBackup Pro you can save hours of time and just restore all of your data to your new ROM.

Along with saving a lot of time for rooted users, this application is easy to use. There aren’t a whole lot of options for the user and the interface is pretty straight forward. Once you click on Backup, it’ll ask you exactly what you need, where you want to save it, and get the task done for you. The same speed is noticed in the restore as well. It’s a bulk one click install, which is nice because some of the free apps in the category require you to click “install” for each application you have.

I’ve been using the paid version of MyBackup Pro since it was released but if you are a root user, Titanium Backup is not only better for backing up/restoring apps and data, it may very well be the best app in the Market. It’s free but to unlock its true power, a $3.99 donation for a license will be necessary.

Titanium Backup does eveything My Backup pro does for cheaper… It will also restore app market links a must for root users.

I actually have both of titanium backup and mybackup pro on my phone mainly because i like titanium’s app backup and management, and use mybackup to back up my data such as SMS, MMS, and stuff like that. I don’t see a need to back up calendars and contacts as google does it for you already.

I agree though that these are MUST haves for root users and rom flashers.

Forgot to mention. This came in very handy for me when I wanted to make the backup from a non-root phone, and restore it on a rooted phone. This was the ONLY app that had the ability to do this properly.

I find that if I install all my apps first, then install the data backup, when it does the home page it will put out the widgets correctly. That being said it has been a while since I have had to use it so maybe this doesn’t work like this (if I did data first then apps it wouldn’t as the app wasn’t there to place on the home screen).

Its been a while since I have had to use its restore capabilities as Nandroid and BART solve my fix the botch issues nicely, and with ROMS that work that I like I normally don’t wipe before flashing as so far the fix permissions script solves any error I might get.

Which version of Titanium Backup does SMS/MMS backup? Is it the free or paid version?

I haven’t used MyBackup Pro since around November, when I started messing with root and custom ROMs on my G1. I remember having two major gripes about it. First of all, I loved that it allowed me to restore my apps, but after reinstalling all of them, if I went to the market, it either told me that an update was available for each one, or it wouldn’t recognize it as install (just gave me an “install” option, which means that if an update came out, I wouldn’t be notified). I’m not sure if this was a limitation in MyBackup Pro or in the older Android version. I have since upgraded to a Nexus One, but have held off on rooting so far. Does anyone know if this issue still persists (especially in 2.1)?

When I scan the QR Code above the Android Marketplace tells me that there are no matches for pname:com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro

I find Titanium too NOT user friendly. MBP is much easier to use, and scheduling is a MUST for me. As well as the ability to backup online… That is awesome.

Nothing better than a good Nandroid backup… that’s if you have a rooted phone.. like me 🙂
